BANGALORE: An elderly man, who tried to rescue his son from being assaulted by an eight-member gang, was murdered in the Vijayanagar police station limits in the early hours on Sunday. According to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), M.C. Narayana Gowda, Nanjappa (70) and his son, Girish Babu, who worked as loan recovery agents for finance companies, seized a mini-lorry and parked it near their house in M.C. Layout on Saturday. The eight-member gang, allegedly led by Manu, came to their house and demanded that the vehicle be handed over to them. When Girish refused, the gang members assaulted him. Girish's father, who tried to intervene, received blows in the melee. Nanjappa was taken to a private hospital, where he died. A case of murder has been booked against the assaulters, Mr. Narayana Gowda added.
Falls to death
A 30-year-old man fell from the third floor of a building under construction and died on Pradusha Street in the Bharathinagar police station limits on Saturday. Police said Balaram was under the influence of liquor. He was climbing up the stairs when slipped and fell. He suffered a head injury and died on the spot. He was working as a security guard for the building, police added.
Suicide
A woman committed suicide by setting herself ablaze in Sahakarinagar in Yelahanka police station limits on Friday. Police said M.R. Prathima set herself ablaze when she was alone in the house. She reportedly left a note stating that nobody was responsible for her act. Pratima was working with a private company prior to her marriage.
In another incident, a 34-year-old man committed suicide by consuming poison in Sriramapura police station limits on Saturday evening. The police said Annamalai (34), who was reportedly suffering from stomach pain, consumed a bottle of liquid to get relief.
Maid arrested
The Hebbal police on Saturday arrested a maidservant on the charge of stealing gold and silver ornaments worth Rs. 1 lakh from a house in Amco Layout.
