MOSCOW: Russia is developing new generation secret weapons, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said recently. "Many countries are working on advanced weapon systems, including Russia," Mr. Ivanov told the Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily. He said nobody would know of these weapons until they have been tested. He argued that Russia had to maintain a big well-armed army to confront new threats. "The factor of unpredictability involving local, religious and ethnic conflicts has grown manifold (since the end of the Cold War)," Mr. Ivanov said.
Testing schedueld
A top Russian missile designer has announced forthcoming testing of a new long-range naval missile. Dr. Yury Solomonov, head of the Moscow Institute for Thermal Technologies, which designed the new missile, said in an interview to the VIP-Premyer magazine that flight trials will crown a "huge amount of work" that went into building the Bulava missile over the past four years. The missile will carry up to 10 nuclear warheads and will be deployed on nuclear submarines. Last month, the Russian Navy Commander, Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov, announced that two new strategic missile submarines, Dmitriy Donskoy and Yuriy Dolgorukiy, armed with 12 Bulava missiles each, will enter service in 2006. The Bulava and the Topol-M missiles are expected to be equipped with new nuclear warheads.
