Letters to the Editor
The allegation of L.V. Saptharishi, Special Observer for Bihar during the 2004 general election, that the two Election Commissioners attempted to countermand the Chapra poll at the instance of the BJP is shocking. Though the Chief Election Commissioner has refuted the allegations as baseless and mala fide, the Government is duty bound to investigate the matter, as there is more than one reason to suspect the claim of the complainant. Also, the timing of the complaint is suspicious as the officer did not raise the issue for over a year.
Mr. Saptharishi's statement that he is prepared to stand by his charge though an affidavit cannot be brushed aside by the Law Ministry. The matter has to be probed and remedial action taken.
S. Thiraviasundaram,
Mr. Saptharishi's charges should be taken seriously since they involve remarks by an independent body against a particular caste. The Government should act fast on this issue and bring out the facts before the public.
Mr. Saptharishi's conduct is contrary to service regulations and his addressing the Press, obviously at the instance of political parties, is shocking.
One person who can feel happy over Mr. Saptharishi's allegations is Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.
