Conventional remarks

BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan's statement on the Ayodhya issue and the Gujarat riots (May 9) have nothing but the conventional connotations. On the Ram temple issue, Mr. Mahajan, like his colleagues and seniors in the past, has chosen to regret the failure of the party to speed up construction of the temple rather than the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Similarly, his "apology" for the Gujarat riots, apart from being a good gesture, has no extra merit.
