Letters to the Editor
The article "Religions as works of art" (May 3) seems to assume that all religions are theistic. Buddhism knows of no God and yet lays down a religious way of life for deliverance from suffering rooted in desire. Even the atheism "assembled" by the author cannot be said to be original. The Spanish-born American philosopher, George Santayana, thought nothing would be so beautiful as Christianity if it were not taken literally. "Religion is human experience interpreted by human imagination," he said and yet was not averse to honouring "the piety and understand the poetry embodied in these fables."
