SHIMOGA: T.K. Anilkumar, Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer, has said that the representatives of political parties have been given basic information about the guidelines to be followed in the byelection to the Lok Sabha from Shimoga. He told presspersons here that the model code of conduct came into effect from May 2, when the calendar of events for the byelection was announced. Government vehicles given to the elected representatives have been withdrawn in view of the model code of conduct. Mr. Anilkumar said a helpline has been provided at the Deputy Commissioner's office and in all taluk headquarters. He said the notification for the byelection was issued on Monday setting the stage for the filing of nomination papers. May 16 is the last date for filing nomination papers. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on May 17, and May 19 is the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers. The election will be held on June 2 and the counting of votes will be taken up on June 5. The election process will come to an end on June 7, he said and added that nominations will not be accepted on Wednesday and Sunday, which are public holidays. He said he has sought verification of electoral rolls and the polling stations and added that the additions or deletions of voters' names will be allowed till May 16 if the applications for them had been submitted before Monday. The final list of voters will be announced on May 18. Mr. Anilkumar said teachers will be drafted extensively for poll duty. The training programme for the poll officials will begin on May 22.

He said the model code of conduct will be in force in the whole of Davanagere district as parts of Channagiri taluk in that district are in Shimoga Lok Sabha Constituency. He said display of cut-outs, gates and arches has been prohibited by the Election Commission. Political parties and candidates should not spoil or deface buildings with the posters and buntings. He said the number of voters from the eight Assembly segments in the Shimoga Lok Sabha Constituency is 12,83,265. As many as 1,367 polling stations will be set up. The guidelines from the Election Commission are awaited on the use of identity cards at the polling booths.
