BANGALORE: Nearly one lakh children are employed in mines and quarries in the Hospet- Bellary region, according to a report by Campaign Against Child Labour-Karnataka (CACL-K) and Mines, Minerals and People (MMP). A fact-finding team that visited the mines at Hospet, Sandur and Illkal on April 15 and 16 found children aged above five employed in the mines and granite quarries for breaking stones, loading, dumping and transporting material. "In some villages most of the children have dropped out of school to work in the mines," Niranjanaradhya, member of the CACL-K, told presspersons here. The report published by the team notes that children employed in the mines handle toxic wastes without any safety equipment. "The working and living conditions are highly exploitative and inhuman," he said. The CACL-K and MMP accused the Government of turning a blind eye to the problem of child labour in these areas. They urged the Centre to repeal the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986. While this Act makes it illegal for children below 14 years to work in hazardous industries such as mines, it regulates the number of hours for children who work in non-hazardous sectors such as houses, they added.
