Tumkur organisations to move court to save tanks

Staff Correspondent

Intellectuals shocked by official's decision to use some water bodies for commercial purposes

TUMKUR: Close on the heels of G. Parameshwar, MLA, taking up with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, the issue of saving 23 tanks in Tumkur, some intellectuals and members of various voluntary organisations held a meeting here on Monday and decided to file a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking an injunction against the recent move by the Deputy Commissioner, M.B. Dyaberi, to use some tanks for commercial purposes.Narayanachar, chairman of the Amanikere Protection Committee; K.R. Nayak, trade union leader; and C. Yatiraj, president, Science Club; expressed shock at Mr. Dyaberi's move to breach the Baddihalli Tank and use it for commercial purposes and to propose to the Centre to develop the Tumkur Amanikere into a commercial complex.

They said: "Mr. Dyaberi is going ahead with his decision despite protests by the public, including farmers."

Mr. Narayanachar said that he had filed a petition in the High Court urging it to issue a directive to save the Amanikere.

Notice

The court had issued notice to Mr. Dyaberi in the case.

However, Mr. Dyaberi sent a proposal to the Centre to develop the tank into a commercial complex on May 2 yielding to the pressure by a former MP, he alleged.

"I will bring this to the notice of the High Court,'' he said.

Directive

Prof. Yatiraj and Mr. Nayak, however, preferred to file a new petition in the court seeking a directive to Mr. Dyaberi to take steps to preserve all major tanks in the city.

Their tank-beds should not be used for commercial purposes on the pretext of developing them into tourist spots, they said.

The meeting approved a suggestion by Prof. Yatiraj and Mr. Nayak and decided to proceed against the Deputy Commissioner.

Farmers in the Baddihalli Tank command area, who have been agitating against levelling the Baddihalli Tank since April 30, expressed support to Dr. Parameshwar's struggle to save 23 tanks in the city.
