Janardhana Poojary rules out tie-up with Janata Dal (Secular) for byelections

BANGALORE: The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the State Congress leaders on Monday left the selection of candidates for byelections to the Lok Sabha from Shimoga constituency and to the Assembly from Chamarajpet constituency on June 2 to the party High Command.

The Chief Minister held discussions with the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, B. Janardhana Poojary, and other senior leaders of the party at the Congress Bhavan here.

The former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily; the former Railway Minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief; the All-India Congress Committee observer, Ershad Baig; the Cooperation Minister, R.V. Deshpande; and the former Minister D.K. Shivakumar participated in the strategy meeting.

Mr. Poojary, who heard the views of senior leaders, expressed his inability to comment on the probable candidates.

He told presspersons that the views elicited will be conveyed to the High Command.

The State unit will abide by the decision taken by the High Command, he said.

He ruled out the possibility of having an alliance with its coalition partner, the Janata Dal (Secular).

The Congress will welcome it if the Janata Dal (Secular) extends support to its candidate in Shimoga, Mr. Poojary said.

Analysing the prospects of the Congress in Shimoga, Mr. Poojary said neither the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nor the Samajwadi Party has any chance of winning from there.

The former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa won on the Bharatiya Janata Party ticket in 1994.

He is contesting as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party now.

On Chamarajpet constituency, Mr. Poojary said, there was unanimity among the party leaders to field R.V. Devaraj, MLC and two-time MLA from Chamarajpet, as he commands voters' support there, sources said.

The second round of discussions on the party's strategy will be held on Tuesday.
