BELFAST: In Northern Ireland the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) this week begins its painful search for a new leader after its disastrous election losses forced leader David Trimble to resign. Mr Trimble, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, announced he would step down this weekend after he lost his seat and the once biggest party in Northern Ireland was reduced to only one MP. Ian Paisley's Democratic Unionists (DUP), which hailed Mr Trimble's defeat with a triumphant show of drumming and cries of ``traitor'' in his Upper Bann constituency, now has nine MPs, dominating a political landscape that is more polarised than ever. The UUP, in its centenary year, is at its lowest ebb and some within the deeply divided party are talking of amalgamation with the DUP. Lady Sylvia Hermon (49), the only Ulster Unionist left in the House of Commons, is one contender in a leadership battle with no clear frontrunner. A lawyer and a liberal, the North Down MP would be expected to steer the Ulster Unionists towards the middle ground. David Burnside, one of Mr Trimble's most powerful critics, could be the choice of those who believe the party must lurch to the Right and ``out-unionist'' the DUP to survive. Mr. Burnside, who lost his seat to the DUP last week despite his opposition to the Good Friday agreement, called for ``a united unionism post-Paisley and post-Trimble''. He said there would be ``realignment'' of the two unionist parties, adding: ``I would prefer a merger.''
