JAKARTA: Indonesia's former President Suharto is suffering from internal bleeding and his condition is potentially life-threatening, doctors said on Monday. ``The bleeding is continuing, his condition is not stable yet ... he needs to remain in intensive care,'' said Mardjo Soebiandono, head of the medical team treating Suharto at Jakarta's Pertamina Hospital. ``The bleeding is influencing other organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys," Dr. Soebiandono said. Asked whether the condition was life-threatening, he answered ``Yes. If the bleeding continues it is (dangerous).'' ``The possibility for recovery is 50-50,'' Dr. Soebiandono said. The 83-year old former strongman was taken to hospital on Thursday after blood tests showed he was anaemic. Suharto, who ruled Indonesia for 32 years, has suffered a number of health problems including two strokes and intestinal bleeding since being forced to resign in 1998 amid violent pro-democracy riots. He was indicted for alleged corruption during his rule, but in 2000 judges threw out the charges against him after a panel of doctors deemed him unfit to stand trial because of brain damage.
