IMPHAL: Leaders of the Kuki and the Hmar tribes in Churachandpur district are holding hectic negotiations to prevent violence on ethnic lines, police reports said. Tension is mounting in the hill district following the murder of two Hmar youths by Kuki militants on Sunday night. One of them was a popular singer while the other was a Hmar youth leader. Sources said the youths were allegedly accosted by some armed Kuki militants, who ascertained their Hmar identities before shooting them dead. The enraged Hmar tribals called a general strike in the district. Normal life was disrupted in Hmar-dominated areas. Fearing violence, the Kuki Impi and Hmar Impui the apex organisations of the respective tribes held an emergency meeting. The armed Kuki militants have not owned responsibility for the killings.
