12 killed in Tumkur, Kolar accidents

TUMKUR/KOLAR: Twelve persons were killed in two road accidents in Tumkur and Kolar districts on Monday. Six persons, including three women, were killed when the Tempo Trax van by which they were travelling was involved in a collision with a light commercial vehicle on Bangalore-Honnavar National Highway, 36 km from Tumkur.

According to eyewitnesses there were 23 passengers in the van and five died on the spot and 13 were injured. The Tempo Trax was nearly crushed under the impact while the driver of the light commercial vehicle sped away after the accident.

Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred around 4.30 p.m. A man who was injured died in hospital. Three of the injured, including the Tempo Trax driver, have been taken to NIMHANS in Bangalore. Three have been admitted to Gubbi hospital, and the rest were brought to Tumkur General Hospital.

Children who were returning home from school noted down the registration number of the light commercial vehicle. The details have been passed on to the police.

Six persons were killed on the spot and six were injured when the lorry in which they were travelling hit a tree near Beechagondahalli Cross in Gudibanda taluk in Kolar district in the early hours of the day.

The names of the dead were given as Ramanji (36), Venkataranga Reddy (30) residents of Jummagalapally of Andhra Pradesh, and Venkatesh (35), Kittappa (31), Shankarappa (36) and Chandrappa (30), residents of Veerappagarapally also in Andhra Pradesh.

It was said the lorry carrying tiles was on its way from Kadiri in Andhra Pradesh to Bangalore when the incident occurred around 1.30 a.m. Though the cause of the accident could not be ascertained, it was said the driver, Kumar, who was tired, lost control over the vehicle.
