Shimoga bypoll: no nominations filed

SHIMOGA: No nomination papers were filed on Monday after the Election Commission issued the notification for the byelection from the Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency. Only the Samajwadi Party has announced its candidate for the election.

The party's State unit President and former Chief Minister, S. Bangarappa, who has announced his candidature, has decided to file his nomination papers on May 13. — Special Correspondent

Cases against farmers to be withdrawn

GADAG: The State Government has decided to withdraw all cases booked against farmers in connection with the farmers' movement in the State, the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, has said.

He was responding to queries raised by the audience at a function here on Sunday. On the need to provide insurance cover to the rabi crop, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the State Government is expecting Rs. 267 crores from the Union Government. — Special Correspondent

Ropeway at Shravanabelagola?

BANGALORE: The Government has set up a technical committee under the chairmanship of the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, M.R. Srinivasa Murthy, to look into the feasibility of setting up a ropeway at Sri Gommatagiri Kshetra on Shravanabelagola Hills on a permanent basis. The 12th Mahamastakabhisheka to Lord Bahubali is to be held in February 2006. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, told presspersons here after a meeting on preparations for the Mahamastakabisheka that 25 lakh devotees are expected to participate in the event. — Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The annual meeting of the South Zone Chief Secretaries held on Monday discussed many things common to all States, including the need to amend some forest laws that impede development.

KPCL to start new projects

BANGALORE: Karnataka Power Transmission Ltd., at its Board meeting here on Monday, decided to take up work on the 500 MW Bellary power project (second unit) and the 210 MW eighth unit of the Raichur Thermal Power Station at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,630 crores in September.

The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said the ongoing works on the first unit of the Bellary project, which can generate 500 MW of power, will be completed in September 2006.

The works on the Alamatti power project, which can generate 290 MW of power, will be completed by the end of July, he added. — Staff Correspondent

National Technology Day celebrations

MYSORE: The Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) here will celebrate National Technology Day on Wednesday on its premises, according to a release.

An array of products and processes developed for the armed forces will be on display at an exhibition to mark the occasion.

New committee welcomed

MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation's decision to constitute a committee for Women and Child Welfare on the lines of existing committees has been welcomed by R. Indira, Reader in Economics, Department of Economics and Cooperation, University of Mysore.

In a release, she described the move as historic. "The proposal has been sent to the Government for approval to make it a statutory committee and the corporation will be the first in Karnataka to form a separate committee for women and child welfare," she said. — Staff Correspondent

Workshop on VLSI inaugurated

MYSORE: A seven-day VLSI education workshop was inaugurated at the Sri Jayachamarajednra College of Engineering here on Monday. S. Karthik, CEO of Analog Devices, Bangalore, said this is the decade of signal processing hardware and pointed out that India is lagging behind in hardware research and development. Sharad Pawar to visit Channarayapatna

HASSAN: The Union Minister for Agriculture, Sharad Pawar, will visit Channarayapatna town on Friday to lay the foundation stone for a new milk plant to be built at a cost of Rs. 100 crores. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will accompany him, according to a press release.

Draft action plan approved

Bidar: Basavakalyan taluk panchayat passed the draft action plan for Rs. 1.53 crore under the Swarna Jayanti Rojgar Yojana. At the general body meeting, members approved the plan by voice vote without discussion. This includes employment generation works, road and bridge works, rejuvenation of tanks and other watershed development works. The Executive Officer, R. Ganesh, informed the meeting that drinking water supply works will be taken up on priority. — Staff Correspondent

10 arrested, toddy seized

Raichur: The Raichur police on Monday arrested Shekarappa, Hanumanthappa, Eranna, Dodda Shivareddy, Sanna Shivareddy, Mahboob, Lingamma, Ajjamma, Shankar and Tayanna and seized 305 litres of spurious toddy from them while they were allegedly selling it in villages and Raichur city.

The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody. Seven cases have been registered with the Raichur Rural, Yergera, Shakthinagar and City West Police Stations.— Staff Correspondent

Three injured in road accident

RAICHUR: Three persons injured when a jeep in which they were travelling overturned and fell into a ditch on the Tavargera-Sindhanur Road on Sunday. The Turvihal Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Boy drowns

RAICHUR: Ameenappa (12), son of Thippanna, drowned in a tank at Thimmapur village in Sindhanoor taluk on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased entered into the tank to fetch water and slipped into deep water. The Balaganur Police registered a case. — Staff Correspondent Chamber welcomes package for bank

HUBLI: Shankaranna Munavalli, President of the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has welcomed the move on the part of the State Government to sanction Rs. 25 crores for the rejuvenation of the Karnataka Central Cooperative Bank, Dharwad. Mr. Munavalli said the Government should release another Rs. 75 crores, which was needed for reviving the bank. — Special Correspondent

Warehouse gutted

HUBLI: A warehouse storing lint caught fire in the early hours of Monday.

Fire was noticed in the warehouse belonging to Jaganmohan around 4 a.m.

On receiving information from the watchman, fire fighters rushed to the spot immediately and put it out. Manjunath Rao, Fire Station Officer, said an electrical short circuit seemed to have caused the fire.

There were 55 bales of lint worth Rs. 20 lakhs in the warehouse. — Special Correspondent
