Neelam and Bishnoi hog the limelight

`Considering that this is the beginning (of the season), this was a satisfying effort'

NEW DELHI: Neelam J. Singh and Jagdish Bishnoi were close to par for a season-opener as the inaugural ATE-Salwan National meet for throws and pole vault went through its first day's card of 18 events at the Salwan Public School grounds here on Monday.

Neelam, slimmer and fitter than the last season, threw to a distance of 58.12 metres in the women's discus competition to clinch the gold, ahead of Harwant Kaur and Krishna Punia.

"Considering that this is the beginning (of the season), this was a satisfying effort," said Neelam.

Most consistent

The 34-year-old Hoshiarpur woman was the most consistent, too, opening with her eventual winning throw and then having a series of 57.07, 57.81, 57.95, 56.66 and 56.05 in a competition that had just four athletes in the fray.

Harwant, the best among the Indian throwers at the Athens Olympics, with her overall 13th placing, sat out the final round and yet clinched the silver, with her opening throw of 56.50m. Krishna had 55.92 for the bronze, on her second attempt.

The most disappointing was Seema Antil, the former World junior bronze medallist from Haryana. She managed a best of 53.71m in her second attempt.

Her series ranging between 51-plus and 53-plus did nothing to enhance her stature as the holder of the National record at 64.64m. (She also had a 64.84m last season that is yet to be ratified.)

Bishnoi won the men's javelin contest on his last throw that measured 75.22.

A season-beginning 75-metre effort should be considered good by Indian standards, though Bishnoi has not got out of the 75-76-metre rut the past few years. Sunil Goswami (74.10) and Gurkirat Singh (73.71) came second and third.

Though everyone was full of praise for the federation having arranged a meet of this nature, the thin fields, not to speak of the handful of spectators proved rather disappointing.
