S.R. Balasubramoniyan meets Governor

CHENNAI: The Congress Legislature Party leader, S.R. Balasubramoniyan, on Monday met the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, in connection with the petitions he presented to the Governor a few weeks ago.

Mr. Balasubramoniyan said the Governor assured him that he would take appropriate action. He had urged the Governor to take action against 11 Ministers who, he alleged, violated their oath by staging a dharna in the city during the Chennai Corporation byelection. He represented to the Governor on the behaviour of the ruling party members on the floor of the House. He said the Opposition parties were not allowed to speak and the Chief Minister was "misusing the Rule 110 of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Rules," preventing discussion on important issues concerning people. — Special Correspondent

Fishermen stage rail roko, 250 held

CHENNAI: About 250 fishermen, including 85 women, belonging to Royapuram here, were arrested on Monday when they attempted to stage a rail rako at Chennai Beach station. According to Southern Railway sources, the fishermen, affiliated to the All-India Fishermen Upliftment Association, demanded that the Central Government route its fund allotment for tsunami relief through the State Government. They also demanded early retrieval of Kachchathevu from Sri Lanka. The president, K.R. Selvaraj Kumar, led the demonstrators. — Special Correspondent

Solatium to kin of constable

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday sanctioned Rs. 1 lakh to the next of kin of P. Selvan, a Grade-I constable, who died in a road accident on May 2.

Selvan was attached to the Mayiladumparai police station in Theni district. Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the amount would be released from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund. — Special Correspondent

Woman, daughter murdered

TIRUCHI : A woman and her daughter were found murdered by a man at his house in Tiruverumbur police limits. He later attempted suicide.

The double murder came to light on Monday when neighbours alerted police after foul smell started emanating from the house. The decomposed bodies of Prema and her daughter, Aarthee, were recovered by the Tiruverumbur police, who sent them for post-mortem examination to the K.A.P. Government Medical College Hospital.

The police said Varadarajan, an employee of the Golden Rock Railway Workshop, was in a semi-conscious state when they arrived at the house.

The police found the body of Prema wrapped in a mattress and that of Aarthee in a bedspread. Varadarajan was admitted to a hospital. — Staff Reporter

Entrance exam results

CHENNAI: Results of the Tamil Nadu Professional Course Entrance Examination will be ready by the evening of May 12 and will be made public soon after, said E. Balagurusamy, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University. According to the original schedule, the results were to be released on May 14.

Single-window counselling for admissions will begin in the first week of July. — Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The mahasamprokshanam of Srinivasa Perumal Temple will be held at Theyyar Village in Vandivasi taluk on Wednesday at 6.30 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Fatally knocked down

Tuticorin: A lorry fatally knocked down a youth, identified as Venkatesh, while he was travelling on a moped here on Monday.

The lorry driver, S Kalirajan was arrested, the Thattaparai police said. — Staff Reporter

Demonstration

Nagercoil: The Federation of Women Associations here staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate on Monday urging the Government to arrest those who were responsible for the death of Ave Marial (17).

According to sources, four youths showered filthy words on her when she was on her way to school. She committed suicide but the police were yet to take action against those who were responsible for her death.

The president of the federation Mary demanded CBI enquiry. — Staff Reporter

Lottery tickets seized, seven held

TIRUNELVELI : The police seized lottery tickets worth Rs. 3.38 lakhs and arrested seven persons for possessing the banned raffle tickets last night.

The sub-inspector of Tenkasi Chakravarthi picked up K. Pattamuthu alias Sekar (24) of Keezhapuliyoor under Tenkasi police station limits during night patrolling. Since he was allegedly possessing 240 lottery tickets, he was arrested.

On information provided by the accused, a special team rushed to Kadayam where it arrested V. Thangam (32) and M. Esakkimuthu (35) of East Kadayam, M. Padmanaban (35) of Mela Ariyappapuram and seized lottery tickets worth Rs.2 lakhs and Rs. 2,130 in cash from the trio.

S. Raman (44), S. Karmaegam (35) and P. Raj (39), all hailing from East Kadayam, were also arrested. Lottery tickets worth Rs.1.38 lakh and Rs. 9,545 in cash were seized.

Further investigations are on to unmask the people, who supplied the lottery tickets to Tenkasi and East Kadayam areas.

36 gamblers held

Tuticorin: Thirty-six gamblers were arrested in a day-long raid conducted across the district on Sunday.

According to police sources, the gamblers were arrested from public places/ grounds situated at Srivaikuntam, Vilathikulam, Kulasekarapattinam, Meiganapuram and Tuticorin areas.

The accused were remanded under TN Gambling Act. — Staff Reporter

Held with pirated VCDs

Tuticorin: Kumar (21) was arrested at Kovilpatti on Sunday for allegedly possessing pirated video compact discs.

The police said 11 VCDs including a copy of `Chandramukhi,' the latest hit in Tamil, were recovered from him. — Staff Reporter

Hunt on for assailant

Tuticorin : The police are on the lookout for Pandaram on the charge of assaulting a 35-year-old woman at Thattaparai on May 8.

Police sources said the accused had attacked the complainant with knife and inflicted injuries to her owing to a wordy quarrel between them. Later, the woman was admitted to the Government Hospital here for treatment. — Staff Reporter

IMFL outlet staff suspended

TIRUNELVELI: The Collector, Atul Anand, has suspened three staff of a wine shop being run by the TASMAC at Alangulam.

In a statement, he said that the Assistant Commissioner (excise), S. Swamidoss, and the Additional Superintendent of Police, K. Gopal, conducted a surprise check in some IMFL outlets on May 2. Since the officials found "some discrepancies" in a shop at Alangulam, they submitted a report to Mr. Atul Anand.

Based on the findings of the report, the Collector suspended the supervisor of the bar attached to the IMFL outlet at Alangulam, M. John Mustafa, and supervisors of the outlet, P. Sekar and V. Selvam. — Staff Reporter

Draft rolls to be displayed on May 10

PERAMBALUR: Draft rolls of the voters' list for the Assembly constituencies in Perambalur district will be released on May 10.

The rolls would be displayed in all post offices, polling booths, Municipal and taluk offices, besides the offices of the Sub-Registrars, Block Development Officers and Revenue Divisional Officers.

In a press release issued here, the Collector, D. Vivekanandan, has appealed to the voters to verify whether their names had been included in the draft rolls.

Persons whose names were not found in the rolls could submit the prescribed applications, which were available free of cost, at these centres between May 10 and 30, from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Inclusion and deletion of names would also be accepted during this period.

Special camps would be held at the polling booths and schools from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on the intervening holidays (May 14, 15, 21 and 22), the release added. — Staff Reporter

Loans sanctioned under NAMT

PERAMBALUR: Loans to the tune of Rs.5.20 crores has been sanctioned for starting agro-industries under the `New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam' (NAMT) in Perambalur district so far, the Collector, D. Vivekanandan, has said.

In a release issued here, the Collector said that the loans would benefit eight entrepreneurs for starting various industries like milk chilling plant, sago unit, modern rice mill, etc.

The projects would generate employment opportunities to nearly 200 persons.

In fact five industries had already been started and work on setting up the balance three units would be completed soon, he added.

The Collector also inaugurated an exhibition of products made by units started with Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana funds at the office of the Revenue Divisional Officer in Ariyalur. — Staff Reporter

NAGAPATTINAM: The Superintending Engineer of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) will hold a grievance day meeting for electricity consumers of Nagapattinam town at the office of the TNEB Superintending Engineer, Sattaiyappar East Street, Nagapattinam, on May 13 from 3.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. — Staff Reporter

College teachers' strike ends

ERODE : The 44-day agitation by the teachers of Erode Arts College ended on Saturday after a settlement was reached between the teachers belonging to the Association of University Teachers (AUT) and the college management. The teachers and the AUT thanked the management and the Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Kumarasamy, for amicably settling the issue.

Chain-snatcher held

ERODE : A chain-snatcher was caught and handed over to the police by the people on Monday. Police said Manikandan of Municipal Colony here snatched the six-sovereign chain of Sait (24), a resident of Omalur, while he was walking along the road inside the bus stand. After committing the offence, he started running. The public on noticing this, caught hold of the chain-snatcher and handed him over to the police. - Staff Reporter
