LUCKNOW: The Election Commission today issued notification for byelection to four Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh where polling is scheduled for June 2. The Assembly seats, where bypolls would be held are Haiserbazar (Santkabirnagar), Varanasi (North), Allahabad (West) and Khairagarh (Agra). While the Haiserbazar seat was vacated by Samajwadi Party member Shankh Lal Manjhi after he got elected to Lok Sabha from Akbarpur (reserved) seat in the by-elections, the other three seats fell vacant due to the death of the members. Of the four seats, two belonged to the ruling Samajwadi Party and one each to the Bahujan Samaj Party and Bharatiya Janata Party. Allahabad (West) Assembly seat fell vacant after BSP member Raju Pal was shot dead on January 25. SP's Abdul Kalam of Varanasi (North) and Ramesh Kant Lavaniya (Khairagarh) died due to illness. State chief electoral officer Vijay Sharma told UNI here that the candidates could file their nomination papers till May 16 while scrutiny of papers would be done the next day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations was May 19. Polling would be held on June 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and counting of votes would be taken up at 8 a.m. on June 5. No political party has yet announced its candidate for the bypolls.
