One-year high: a slew of measures for farmers' welfare

HYDERABAD: Marking the completion of one year by the Congress Government by May 14, the Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, has announced six measures to benefit farmers, besides claiming a number of achievements in the agriculture sector.

An ordinance will be promulgated after approval by the next Cabinet meeting to curb spurious bio-fertilizers flooding the market these days.

A draft Bill for introducing a legislation is ready but it will be given effect through the ordinance as the Assembly is not in session.

Crop insurance

At a press conference here on Monday, the Minister said crop insurance scheme would be implemented with village as unit from this kharif season on pilot basis in Anantapur, Cuddapah, Mahabubnagar, Vizianagaram and Karimnagar districts. DNA lab facility was launched for it.

Mr. Reddy claimed that the Government had scored many firsts in the farm sector.

It was also decided to establish the Agriculture Technology Mission after getting suggestions at `rytu sadassus' planned from May 20 to June 5, revive AP Agros, AP Seed Development Corporation and AP Seed Certification Agency, extend Rs. 4,000 crores of extra loans this year; take steps against entry of BT cotton into the State unless certified by Acharya Ranga Agriculture University and to extend credit to tenant-farmers also through 52,000 Ryhtu Mithra Groups.

Achievements

The achievements claimed by the Minister included implementation of free power supply, acceptance of 114 out of the 174 recommendations by the Jayati Commission, revival of 27 state seed farms and production of 1 lakh quintals of certified seed through 322 seed villages.
