MYSORE: A two-day training programme for drivers of heavy vehicles and trucks began here on Monday. The programme has been organised by the Mysore City Police in coordination with the Union Ministry of Surface Transport and Highways and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) to create awareness on road safety among truck and bus drivers. The training programme will focus on issues such as the condition of roads, highway signals, occurrence of accidents, drunken driving, and behavioural aspects of drivers. The participants will also be given training on avoiding accidents, safety measures in the event of accidents, and emergency first-aid. The Mysore City Police Commissioner, Pravin Sood, who inaugurated the training programme, said that around 60,000 fatal road accidents are reported in the city each year and a majority of them are avoidable if proper safety measures are taken by the drivers. Mr. Sood said that the police will organise similar training programmes for other sections of the public as well. Next month, a training programme will be organised for teachers, he said. The department has already organised such programmes for the drivers of police vehicles, Mysore City Corporation vehicles, KSRTC buses, government vehicles, private taxi drivers, and auto drivers. The participants are being given a stipend of Rs. 150, besides an insurance coverage of Rs. 1 lakh. Faculty members of IRTE, Dilip and Shiva, and the IRTE Principal, Girish Kukrei, were present at the training programme.
