CHAMARAJANAGAR: The Minister for Food and Civil Supplies and in charge of the district, H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, has said that a Rs. 200-crore proposal has been submitted to the Union Government seeking sanction for developing places of tourist interest in the State. Addressing presspersons here at the Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday, he said Rs. 20 crores has been sought to develop tourist centres such as Bandipur National Park, B.R. Hills, M.M. Hills, and Hoganekal Falls in the district. He said the Cauvery Niravari Nigam has released Rs. 3 crore to develop the Gundaal Reservoir as tourist centre. Mr. Prasad said that guesthouse will be constructed and the road from Kollegal to Gundaal and Doddinduvadi village to Gundaal improved. He said that steps have been taken to install a 70-ft statue of Lord Shiva at M.M. Hills. He added that it has been proposed to set up a folklore research centre at M.M. Hills.
Drought hit
Mr. Prasad said the Government has declared Chamarajanagar and Yelandur taluks as drought hit. He said steps have been taken to ease the drinking water crisis in Kollegal and Gundlepet taluks. Around 20,000 quintals of rice and Rs. 2.11 crores cash component has been released to the district under the drought-relief scheme, the Minister added. He said that of the Rs. 2.83 crores and 7,520 tonnes of foodgrains released last year, Rs. 1.53 crores and the entire quantity of foodgrains has been spent on employment-generation schemes, Rs. 86 lakhs on providing drinking water, and Rs. 54 lakhs for repairing roads. Mr. Prasad also said that to avoid demolition of houses while widening National Highway 209, a proposal has been submitted to the Government to construct bypass roads in villages.
