Take out rally, submit memorandum Colleges should continue to offer Kannada even if only one student opts for it, the teachers say

MANGALORE: Kannada teachers in colleges in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts coming under Mangalore University on Monday took out a rally and staged a demonstration in protest against a degree college here scrapping Kannada as an optional subject.

The teachers from the three districts presented a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to the Deputy Commissioner in which they alleged that many colleges are trying to remove Kannada as an optional subject for "flimsy" reasons.

Kannada teacher N. Damodar Shetty said Kannada should be made a compulsory subject at all levels of education. Colleges should offer Kannada even if only one student opts for it, he said and added that the Government should give funds to colleges in the State to offer Kannada courses.

Extending support to the agitation by Kannada teachers, the president of the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers, Hayavadana Upadhyaya, said the struggle is not against any particular college but against the attitude of branding Kannada as "unviable."

Agitation threatened

Harikrishna Punarur, former president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, said if the Government does not take action to help Kannada get its rightful place, the parishat will not hesitate to launch a State-wide agitation to make the Government change its stand.
