MANGALORE: The Lady Hill-Urva Stores road will be open for traffic from Tuesday. The Mayor, Purandaradasa Kulur, told presspersons here on Monday that the official opening will take place whenever the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, finds time for it. Although the road is ready for traffic, work on medians, shouldering, and pavements is yet to be completed. Work on this will start on Wednesday, he added. The road, which links Kottara Chowki and Bunts Hostel Circle, was concreted at a cost of Rs. 3.2 crores. All roads in the city will be concreted in phases.
New bus shelters
He said the next project of the Mangalore City Corporation is to improve the bus bays and bus stands. Movva Associates of Bangalore has been requested to design bus shelters for the city on the lines of the ones in Bangalore. In Mangalore, 280 new-look bus stands and bus bays will be built, he said. The new road will have three new bus stops and adequate space for it has been created, he said. When pointed out that the peripheral areas of the road are dangerous for the movement of pedestrians and smaller vehicles, Mr. Kulur said the corporation plans to strengthen the periphery of the road and all the approaches will be asphalted after providing a suitable base. Ramps will be provided so that vehicles coming onto the road will not face traffic hazards.
Complex
Asked about land left vacant at the old service bus stand at Hampankatta, Mr. Kulur said the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and the corporation are jointly developing the area into a multi-storeyed office and shopping complex which will have an exclusive two-storeyed parking lot for 400 cars. The MUDA and the corporation have given the proposal to the Government and a Cabinet decision is expected anytime now, he said. The proposed complex will be built at a cost of Rs. 32 crores. Similarly, a Cabinet decision is expected shortly for the new dam at Thumbe, Mr. Kulur added. Meanwhile, the corporation has taken up probe into the alleged case of misuse of the corporation's letterhead by officials to garner money for repair of a private tennis court and procedural lapses allegedly committed by the officials in six months in various matters concerning functioning of the corporation council.
