Zilla panchayat's achievements

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat registered 100 per cent and 108 per cent growth during 2003-04 and 2004-05, respectively.

The zilla panchayat President, Somanath, told a press conference here on Monday that the zilla panchayat spent Rs. 35.50 crores against Rs. 35.46 crores released by the Union and State governments during 2003-04 under plan programmes and recorded an achievement of 100 per cent. It spent Rs. 38.97 crores against Rs. 36.08 crores released by the governments during 2004-05 under plan programmes and registered an achievement of 108 per cent. Mr. Somanath said he was satisfied with the functioning of the Education Department during his 20-month tenure. Singling out Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for praise, he said physical assets were created under the programme.

He expressed unhappiness at the manner in which the Integrated Tribal Development Programme and the Social Welfare Departments functioned during his tenure. These departments, despite the funds available to them, failed in meeting the aspirations of the weaker sections of society, especially tribal people, he said.

Asked about the steps taken to mitigate drinking water crisis in rural areas, Mr. Somanath said the panchayat is supplying water through tankers to some places in Mangalore and Bantwal taluks.

Malavoor project

Noting that 2,183 drinking water schemes have been completed under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission at a cost of Rs. 41.14 crores, Mr. Somanath said additional funds of Rs. 5.86 crores with the panchayat is being used to take up the Malavoor drinking water project in Mangalore taluk.

The Government has accorded technical and administrative sanction for the project estimated to cost Rs. 14 crores, he said and added that the project will supply water to nearly 11 villages in the taluk. Also, two schemes at Aranthodu and Subramanya in Sullia taluk are nearing completion, he said.
