BROKEN WALL: A commuter walks through the broken wall at Chromepet railway station. Photo: K. Manikandan
TAMBARAM: A portion of the compound wall that prevented commuters from crossing the railway tracks near the Chromepet railway station has been knocked down by miscreants. The compound wall was broken down at two places to facilitate vendors and commuters to reach GST Road from the platform without having to use the foot over bridge.
Knocked down
Last month, a 24-year-old woman was knocked down by an electric train when she was crossing the track. Following media reports and complaints from residents and activists, the Railway authorities erected iron beams near the overbridge and also plugged the gaping holes in the wall to ensure that commuters used the foot over bridge. However, the wall has again been broken by miscreants. Residents and traders near the railway station suspect that it must have been done by commuters and vendors. As vendors found it difficult to carry their wares on the over bridge, they could have broken the wall.
Frequent checks
Residents said that railway authorities should conduct frequent checks and take punitive action against those who cross the tracks. The checks should at least be conducted in those places where a subway or foot over bridge is available. Rail users and local residents regretted that even a tragic accident had not changed the attitude of commuters. They said the railway authorities should take steps to find a permanent solution to the problem.
