PONDICHERRY: Actor Vivek Oberoi's Project Hope is expected to take off at Pattinamcherry in Karaikal by the end of the month.

The final paper work for the construction of permanent houses for the December 26, 2004 tsunami-affected fishermen in the village may be finalised on May 13.

"There was some problem in getting a financier. But the actor has sorted that out and a foreign financier has agreed to fund the project. A representative of Project Hope is expected to come here and meet senior officials to finalise the project," Lt. Governor M.M. Lakhera, told The Hindu .

The Government has approved the design of the dwelling units. The pattern of housing will be 16 independent houses in a square with each having a veranda, a bedroom and a kitchen.

All the houses would have attached toilets, Mr. Lakhera said.

Under the project, the actor would construct 350 houses and other basic amenities in the village.

Also, the Delhi-based NGO, Ratanjali, is set to start construction of permanent houses by the first week of June. The Government is acquiring 11 acres at Narambai and another nine acres at Nallavadu for handing it over to the Maharashtra Government, which would construct 150 houses at Nallavadu and 100 houses at Narambai.

"We have asked them to submit the project report and the design of the dwelling units at the earliest," B.V. Selvaraj, Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner, said.

Society to be registered

A society — Project Implementation Agency — would soon be registered to oversee construction works.

A project director would be appointed to head the agency and under him there would be sectoral officers to supervise housing, amenities, fishing livelihood and agricultural land reclamation, sources in the administration said.
