CHENNAI: The Palani temple hillock, which has suffered severe deforestation, will soon see an "aesthetic amelioration" plan drawn up by the Environment Department. The environmental management plan, which envisages reversal of loss of ecology in the Arulmighu Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple hillock, will be carried out in co-ordination with the HR&CE Department under the Tenth Five Year Plan, according to officials. A sum of Rs. 10 lakhs has been earmarked for the project. One of the major components will be a waste management plan under which the waste generated inside the temple premises will be composted and used for afforestation. Sullage water will be used for watering the vegetation. A nandavanam (garden) of local trees and shrubs will also be set up in which saplings of the kadamba tree (Anthocaphalus cadamba), the sthalavriksham of the temple, will be planted. A stonewall will be constructed around the garden, which will also be a storehouse for local tree species. In addition, an extensive water conservation plan has been drawn up.
Mini check dams
A series of mini check dams and water channels will be constructed for soil and moisture conservation and for providing water to the saplings. The temple tank will also be desilted and deepened. The Department had implemented a similar plan at the Sholingar temple hillock in Vellore district last year.
