HYDERABAD: The former Minister, Konda Laxman Bapuji, and some academics have sought the release of the State president of Handloom Weavers Federation, M. Mohan Rao, who has been taken into custody by the Prakasam district police for questioning, in connection with his alleged links with Maoists. Speaking to reporters here on Monday, they said Mr. Rao was known for his deep understanding of the problems of the handloom sector. He had been invited to address seminars by premier institutions, including the Planning Commission and could not be expected to subscribe to violent activities of the Maoists, they maintained. They vouched for his apolitical lifestyle and expressed confidence that the federation he headed was not involved in any underground activities. His arrest was a conspiracy by the Government to throttle the voice of weavers, they alleged. Demanding that he be treated with dignity in custody, they wanted due process of law to be followed. Those present included Naresh Sharma and K. Srinivas, both professors.
