SINGAPORE: Myanmar has awarded two contracts to India for the exploration of oil and natural gas on a "production-sharing basis," according to diplomatic sources. The two countries on Monday ended four days of discussions on border security issues, they said. A ranking Indian Army officer, Lt. Gen. Daljeet Singh, called on the Vice-Chairman of Myanmar's ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, in Yangon on Monday. Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise and the Indian firm, ESSAR Oil, signed the oil and gas contracts in Yangon on Saturday. Under the deal, the Indian company has earmarked Rakhine Offshore Block A2 and Rakhine Onshore Block L for exploration. As for India's participation in Myanmar's oil exploration programmes, the accord follows the award of two other blocks to the South Korean firm, Daewoo, in association with the Oil and Natural Gas Commission Videsh Limited and the Gas Authority of India Limited. Exploration is under way in one block, plans have been ready for the other.
