Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Monday stood at 112.2 feet with an inflow of 84 cusecs and a discharge of 130 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 30.81 feet with no inflow and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 1580 feet.

Two nabbed in double murder case

The K. Pudur police on Monday arrested two persons in connection with a double-murder case.

According to police sources, M. Madhavan (36) of S. Kodikulam and his brother, M. Karthik (20) were taken into custody for murdering V. Chandran (60) and C. Nagarajan (24) on the Sambakulam Road on Sunday.

The duo were produced before a city magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.

Head constable's house burgled

Burglars entered the house of a police head constable at Athikulam here on Sunday night and decamped with 21 sovereigns of gold ornaments.

The police said the accused gained entry, forcing open the window grills of the house when the inmates had gone out. The jewels kept in the almirah were missing. Based on a complaint lodged by P. Indira (40), wife of the head constable, the Oomachikulam police have registered a case.

Award conferred

The `Mahatma Mahaveer' award was conferred on L. Shanmugam, secretary of Upaharmadurai, for his service to the society at a function held here recently. Surendra R. Lalan, president of Gujarati Seva Samaj, presented the award.

Mr. Shanmugam is instrumental in the implementation of integrated education for the disabled in seven districts of Tamil Nadu. He has also received the `Best Social Worker' award from the State Government. — Staff Reporter
