Demand for better safety on DU campus

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: : Expressing shock and anger at the assault of a Delhi University student on Sunday morning, teachers and students on Monday condemned the incident and demanded better safety measures on the campus.

In a statement, the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) said: "Delhi being the Capital, students from all States come here to pursue higher education and search for jobs. These incidents are increasing the insecurity and movement of female students in the city. The police should nab the culprits immediately.''

The DUTA also demanded that security be provided to students in both the North and South campuses and the adjoining areas.

While clarifying that the girl was not their student, Sri Venkateswara College came down heavily on the lack of adequate security in the area.

"The girl may not be from our college, but we unanimously condemn the incident. As far as we know, she was a resident of the Satya Niketan area.

It is not a matter of what time she was out, every girl has the right to be out at the time of her choice for a cup of tea.

We have research students coming out of the South Campus premises late in the night, and this is not encouraging for them,'' said the Sri Venkateswara College Principal, A.S.Reddy.
