CISF constable killed in mishap

NEW DELHI: A constable of the Central Industrial Security Force posted at Parliament House here was killed when his gun fired accidentally while he was alighting from a staff bus at Gate No. 8 of the premises at around 7-40 a.m. on Monday.

The New Delhi police said 22-year-old Vipul Das, who hailed from Kamrup district of Assam and was with the 127th Battalion of CISF at Todapur, was coming for duty at Parliament House when the mishap took place. He had joined the force in 2003.

As he was alighting from the bus he placed his foot down on the ground, the base of his self-loading rifle hit the ground triggering off the bullet that went though his chest and heart, and then through the body of the bus. The constable immediately collapsed on the ground. He was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Police patrolling

NEW DELHI : Concerned over recent incidents of criminal assault in the Capital, the All-India Mahila Congress president, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, has written to the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.

Ms. Joshi has asked for an increase in police patrolling in the Capital and the border areas after dusk. The All-India Mahila Congress has also despatched fact-finding teams to look into these incidents.

Healthcare

NEW DELHI : Almost six decades after Independence, children still don't seem to count. With the well-intentioned policies framed by the Government for them yet to be fully implemented, close to 20 lakh children die every year due to inadequate healthcare facilities.

Three years after the UN General Assembly Special Session on Children was held in 2002, concerned citizens and activists came together in the Capital on Monday to take stock of the situation. The situation they feel is still dismal and the Government was far from meeting or fulfilling its obligation to children.

Domestic servant allegedly raped

NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old woman working as a domestic servant today alleged she was raped by a man who had brought her from Bihar for employment here, police said today.

The girl, who worked in a house in Pitampura in north Delhi, fainted yesterday after which her employers took her to doctor. Tests revealed that she was pregnant, police said.

She then said that last November, she had to stay for some days in the house of one Mahavir, who had brought her from Bihar for employment here, as employers were out.

Mahavir had sexually assaulted her then but threatened to kill her if she spke about it, the woman alleged.

A case had been registered in Kotla Mubarakpur Police Station in south Delhi and efforts were on to trace Mahavir, police sources said.

Woman electrocuted

NEW DELHI : A housewife was electrocuted today and police said they suspected it to be a case of dowry killing.

Anju, in her 20s and married recently, died when she allegedly came in contact with a live wire in her house in Khanjawala.

However, police suspect her in-laws could have been involved as they were demanding a large dowry. Investigations were on into the case, police said.
