This Day That Age
"India should have at least five times the present number of cinemas in the next five years. Our target should be one cinema for every village in the country along with the progress of the community projects," said Mr. S.K. Patil, the newly elected President of the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association, talking to pressmen in Bombay on May 9. He said there were only 3,200 theatres in the whole country for a population of about 35 crores. This was very inadequate. Mr. Patil regretted that the Government had failed to implement the recommendations of the Film Enquiry Committee. The proposal to set up a National Film Board, a Film Production Bureau and a Film Institute was not on the pattern suggested by the Film Enquiry Committee. According to a survey nearly 500 producing concerns had come to grief in Bombay since 1946. It was not often realised that for every successful picture there were at least 20 failures. Some concrete steps were needed to help the industry.
