Letters to the Editor
The aspersions cast on the Election Commission over the countermanding of the 2004 election in Chapra where Railway Minister Lalu Prasad contested are unfortunate. It was a difficult task for the EC in Bihar with gangs resorting to booth-capturing, and indulging in violence. Against this background, to impute motives to the EC and bring in an extraneous casteist angle is to undermine the constitutional status of the Commission members. If such acrimony by political parties continues, democracy will be the loser.
P.K. Kalyana Raman,
The Commission along with the Supreme Court is one of the few constitutional institutions that enjoys a high credibility among the Indian public. It is unfortunate that some vested interests are attempting to tarnish the Commission's image.
