KOZHIKODE: : The BJP State president, P. S. Sreedharan Pillai, has alleged that corrupt deals had influenced the Government decision to withdraw cases taken against the accused in the Nadapuram violence. "The move to withdraw the cases is illegal since some of the charges against the accused are non-bailable offences. Gulf money influenced this decision,'' he alleged at a press conference here on Tuesday. It was not uncommon to withdraw cases on merit of each case but he found it surprising that all cases were being withdrawn in one go. Some of the cases were charged under the Explosives Act. They were of a serious nature, he pointed out. His party would seek legal opinion about the scope for challenging the Government decision in the court. He expressed shock at the recent Cabinet decision to withdraw the cases since the Government had even doled out compensation to the tune of nearly Rs. 3 crores for losses during the violence which involved mainly CPI(M) and National Development Front workers.
Accused absconding
Since some of the accused in the case were absconding and believed to have fled to Gulf countries to escape arrest soon after the violence in 2001, Mr. Sreedharan Pillai said there was strong reason to believe that they had resorted to corrupt practices to get the cases withdrawn so that they would be able to return home to their relatives. The BJP leader also alleged that by agreeing to withdrawal of the case, leaders of the IUML and the CPI(M) had let down their party workers who had been victims of violence. Answering questions, Mr. Sreedharan Pillai strongly refuted reports that the Yuva Morcha State president, K. Surendran, had sought his removal from the post. He claimed that such reports were concocted by the media. "Mr. Surendran himself has told me he has not made any such move,'' Mr. Sreedharan Pillai claimed.
