BANGALORE: The country's first ever academy dedicated to the promotion and propagation of science and scientific temper, Karnataka Vienna and Tantrika Vignana Academy, is being set up by the Government. The academy will be constituted under the chairmanship of scientist U.R. Rao. The former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation, who heads the State's committee to frame the science and technology policy, will lead the academy's programmes and projects that will complement the work of the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, Basavaraj Horatti, the Science and Technology Minister, told presspersons here on Tuesday.
Plans ready
The academy will have seed money of Rs. 15 lakhs, and it has drawn up plans to publish science books and journals in Kannada, take the news of innovations and inventions to the rural areas, and encourage research projects in educational institutions for speedy transfer of technology and best practices to the field from the laboratory, Mr. Horatti said. Apart from Prof. Rao, the academy will have five secretaries of departments such as Industries, Forest and Ecology, and representatives from institutions such as the Central Food Technology Research Institute (CFTRI), the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), the ISRO, and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. There will also be 10 scientists from universities and institutions the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences, S. Bisilaiah, the Indian Veterinary Research Institute's M.R. Gajendragad, the former Bangalore University physics faculty, Uchhal, B.S. Shankar, professor of medicine, Edwin Gururaj (zoology), Ramalingaiah (environmental scientist from Mandya), a chemistry processor from Indian Institute of Science Muniyappa, S.V. Sanknur (biology) from Kannada Ganaka Parishat, and Sudha Murthy of Infosys Foundation (Information Technology).
