Goldsmiths oppose `dumping' of jewellery

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Readymade gold ornaments dumped in the market and people's preference for them have rendered many goldsmiths and silversmiths jobless.

This is also true in the case of goldsmiths and silversmiths living in Bellary. There are around 1,000 families here which depend on making jewellery for their livelihood. But today, most goldsmiths and silversmiths are unemployed ever since readymade jewellery prepared in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra started making inroads into the market.

Goldsmiths who are often poor find it difficult to procure machinery to make ornaments. Also, the lack of required skill-sets has made their life miserable, S. Dadapeer and Ravichandra, office-bearers of the Bellary Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Youth Association, said.

"Our concern is with regard to the dumping of ornaments into the market without bill and valid documents," they lamented and said if this is prevented, goldsmiths will be in a position to get some work.

Urging the authorities concerned to prevent the dumping of readymade gold ornaments, the association members appealed to the Government to provide them employment. The association has also appealed to the people to avoid readymade ornaments as "they might be attractive but the quality is suspect." "This will help goldsmiths to survive," the office-bearers said.
