HAVERI: The visit of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to Haveri on Thursday to declare open the new district office complex has set off a controversy. Legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who dominate the district, have complained over what they defined as an "affront" meted out to them during the arrangements made for the Chief Minister's visit. They have taken exception to the invitation printed for the main function, which says that the Minister for Small Savings and Lottery and district in charge, Basavaraj Horatti, will preside over the function. According to them, government rules clearly state that only the MLA of the respective constituency in which a function is being held, should preside over the function. They noted that this happened in the cooperative centenary celebrations at Kanaginhal village in Gadag district where Kalakappa Bandi, BJP MLA in whose constituency the function was held, presided over the function. They sought to know why an exception has been made in case of Haveri. Going by the convention, Shivaraj Sajjanagar, BJP MLA of Haveri, should have been asked to preside over the function. Instead, the district administration has invited the Minister to preside over the function. The BJP legislators have threatened to boycott Thursday's function. The district office complex has come up at Devagiri village about six km away from Haveri town at a cost of Rs. 15 crores.
