Chief Minister defers decision on daily wage workers

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Tuesday said the problem of regularising the services of daily wage workers in different government departments cannot be solved on a piecemeal basis.

The State Government will have to take a comprehensive decision on regularising the services of over 50,000 daily wage workers working in government departments, he added. Responding to a memorandum submitted by the president of the Karnataka State SC and ST Government and Semi-Government Daily Wage Workers' Association, Chandrasekhar Hiremath, and other office-bearers here, Mr. Singh said the association's plea to regularise the services of over 17,000 daily wage workers was discussed in a meeting convened by him in Bangalore on April 7.

He pointed out that there are over 50,000 daily wage workers working in the State. The Government cannot take a decision on regularising the services of 17,000 workers and leave the others out.

A comprehensive decision will have to be taken to find a solution to the problem, he added. Meanwhile, the association intensified its agitation in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office with its members signing in blood a memorandum listing their demand to be submitted to the President, Abdul Kalam, and the United Progressive Alliance Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi.

The members of the association threatened to start an indefinite hunger strike before the Deputy Commissioner's office from May 12 if the Cabinet meeting on that day fails to take a decision on their demand to regularise the service of 17,000 daily wage workers.
