NEW DELHI: Ranvijay Singh pushed veteran Shakti Singh down the medals order by clinching the shot put gold on the final day of the ATE-Salwan National throws and pole vault meet at the Salwan Public school grounds here on Tuesday.

Ranvijay, only the third Indian to cross 20 metres, a distance (20.26m) that he achieved last season, putted to 19.89 metres on his last attempt to nail the gold with an impressive mark. He had led the field of eight after a fourth round throw of 18.88 after Shakti had taken the throwers into the last three rounds in front. The 43-year-old Haryana man had started with an 18.58, but that was the best he could produce this day and eventually settled for the bronze behind Delhi youngster Kuldeep Singh Mann who had a fourth round putt of 18.65m.

Once the women pole-vaulters, V.S. Surekha of Tamil Nadu and Chetna Solanki had fumbled in their National record attempts at 3.60 metres, the focus had completely shifted to the shot put circle where Shakti, who missed the Olympics qualification last year, attracted attention. Having shed more than 10kg, Shakti, national record holder and now a qualified coach, is showing his usual enthusiasm, and should forge ahead of the youngsters during the season. Asian Games champion Bahadur Singh was absent here, while Navpreet Singh opted out because of an injury.
