Education Dept. transfers to be completed by May 15

Staff Reporter

Over 15,000 applications have been received, says Ramalinga Reddy

  • Process to be over before poll notification
  • No counselling this time
  • Textbooks for all classes ready
  • 13,000 classrooms to be constructed this year

BANGALORE: The Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, R. Ramalinga Reddy, on Tuesday said the transfer process in the department, particularly those of teachers, will be completed well before the notification for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections is issued, which will be before May 15.

Mr. Reddy told presspersons here that as per the guidelines, only five per cent of the cadre could be transferred. The district authorities, his office and the Chief Minister's office have received over 15,000 applications.

Mr. Reddy said couples seeking transfers and employees who want mutual transfers could now breathe easy, as the rule that they should have completed five years in service before seeking such transfers has been relaxed.

He said plans to complete the transfer exercise through counselling have been shelved this time as time is short and the panchayat polls are to be held.

Textbooks for all classes are "100 per cent ready," Mr. Reddy said, and all students will receive the books before classes begin in the new academic year.

The Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation, which has been meeting 60 per cent of the requirement of fabric for uniforms, has delivered the entire order. The powerloom sector, which is to supply the remaining 40 per cent, will complete delivery in the next three weeks. This time the tailoring of the uniforms is left to the parents of the students and only the fabric will be given.

The State needs 17,000 kitchens for the Akshara Dasoha midday meal scheme, Mr. Reddy said. This year, Rs. 30 crores has been released for the construction of 6,000 kitchens. The zilla panchayats and taluk panchayats have been constructing several kitchens under their own schemes and the rest will be taken up in the next phase.

Mr. Reddy said there is a requirement for 22,500 classrooms, in addition to the 12,000 old classrooms that need urgent repairs or replacement. Under various schemes as part of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, 13,000 classrooms will be constructed during the current year at a cost of Rs. 200 crores. As many as 150 pre-university colleges will be opened this year, depending on the demand for such colleges.

Mr. Reddy sought a week's time to come up with a solution to donation menace in private schools and a crackdown on unauthorised schools that have mushroomed in many places.

    EDUSAT programme

After the successful launch of the EDUSAT programme in Chamarajanagar, it would be launched in Gulbarga and Bidar, and the Government has already written to the Indian Space Research Organisation in this regard, Mr. Reddy said.
