Naidu's assurance to BGML employees

Kolar Gold Fields: The former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday assured employees of Bharat Gold Mines Ltd. (BGML) that he will take up the matter of their voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) and other issues with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, shortly. Mr. Naidu, who was on his way to Kuppam, his home constituency, was responding to an appeal by the BGML employees to intervene and expedite the process of the VRS now pending before the Union Government. BGML was closed in 2001 and employees are yet to get VRS.

The Telugu Desam Party President also promised the employees all help from his party. Mr. Naidu declined to reply when asked about the water dispute between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. — UNI

Foresters seek

more facilities

BANGALORE: Members of the Karnataka State Foresters' Association have urged the State Government to treat them on a par with other departments such as the Police and Fire Service departments by providing more facilities. The members complained that payment to department employees is inadequate.

The members' other grievances are that the weaponry provided to them is obsolete, K. Lingappa, the general secretary of the association, told presspersons here on Tuesday. "Although we have double-barrelled guns, there is only one gun for one particular area, and the weapons dacoits and poachers use are much more advanced than ours," he said.

BANGALORE: All Head Post Offices and select post offices in Bangalore are now accepting premiums due on various non-life insurance policies of Oriental Insurance Company on all working days, including Saturdays. Sindhia holds meeting with officials

BANGALORE: The Minister for Industries and Infrastructure Development, P.G.R. Sindhia, held a meeting here on Tuesday with top officials of the Industries, Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry departments to discuss the implementation of development schemes in 39 backward taluks.

The meeting discussed the availability of resources, market facilities, infrastructure, identification of clusters of industries and financial assistance to be given to beneficiaries, according to a release from the Karnataka Udyoga Mitra, a State Government undertaking. — Staff Reporter

K.B. Nagur elected president

BIJAPUR: K.B. Nagur, chairman of Basavaraj Nagur Memorial Education Trust, Bijapur, has been elected president of the National Federation of Private Ayurvedic Medical College Associations. Dr. Nagur was chosen to head the federation at its national executive committee meeting held in Nagpur on Sunday. He is the president of the Karnataka State Private Ayurvedic Medical College Association. He is the first person from the region to head the body at the national level, a press release of the trust said.

152 candidates to contest APMC polls

HASSAN: As many as 151 candidates will contest the elections to the six agriculture produce marketing committees (APMCs) in the district, which is scheduled to be held on May 19.

A press release from the Deputy Commissioner, K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, said nine candidates have been elected unopposed, and the election will be conducted for 57 seats. While there are 143 candidates in the farmers' segment, the number of candidates from the traders' segment is eight. — Staff Correspondent

Agreement signed

HASSAN: As many as 1,980 workers employed in the Karnataka Forest Development Corporation, Sullia, will get a compensation of Rs. 68.60 lakhs and the services of 198 workers have been regularised, according to an agreement signed by the labourers' unions and the management. The workers' unions have assured the management of not raising any dispute for the next two years.

A press release by the Deputy Labour Commissioner, G.T. Jinkalappa, said seven workers' unions of the corporation have singed the agreement in his presence. — Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA: The Upalokayukta, G. Patribasavana Gowda, will visit Chitradurga on Thursday. A press release issued by the Superintendent of Police of Lokayukta, S. Chandra Naik, said Mr. Gowda will receive petitions from people at the Travellers' Bungalow from 1.30 p.m. — Staff Correspondent

Science competitions

GULBARGA: The District Science Centre will hold an extempore on different science and technology topics and an open house quiz on general science topics on Wednesday to mark National Technology Day.

The District Science Officer, K. Sajoo Bhaskaran, said in a press release that the extempore competition and the quiz are open for students and the general public.

The Science centre has also organised a month-long "Sky observation programme" for the general public to view Saturn and Jupiter planets.

Insurance employees protest

MYSORE: Employees of all public sector general insurance companies will stage a dharna in front of the Divisional Office of the National Insurance Company at Ramaswamy Circle at 10 a.m. on May 12.

The dharna has been organised in response to a call for a nationwide protest by the Joint Forum of Trade Unions and Associations in General Insurance.

According to a press statement, the dharna has been organised to protest against the continuing indifference of the Government and the management of the four public sector insurance companies to the demand for wage revision of general insurance employees. — Staff Correspondent

`No rethink on semester scheme'

GULBARGA: Gulbarga University on Tuesday categorically stated that there is no going back on the decision to introduce semester scheme for undergraduate courses in all the colleges affiliated to the university from the academic year 2005-06.

The Registrar of the university, S. Rajanna, said in a press release that the decision to introduce the semester scheme is in line with the decision taken in a meeting of the Inter-University Board chaired by the Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, on September 28 last year.

Youth dies in accident

SHIMOGA: Mohammed Shafi (18), a student of Acharya Tulasi National Commerce College here, was knocked down by a college bus. He succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

The police said that the accident occurred when Shafi was riding his motorcycle with his friend Anthony on the pillion when the bus knocked him down.

Anthony escaped, while Shafi was crushed under the bus.

A case has been registered.

MAHE signs MoU with University of Queensland

Manipal: The Vice-Chancellor of MAHE, H.S. Ballal, has visited several universities in Australia to promote education, research, and exchange interests. A press release by MAHE here said the universities visited by Prof. Ballal included the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, Victoria University, Griffith University, the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and Latrobe University.

Prof. Ballal also signed a memorandum of understanding with University of Queensland in the field of biotechnology and with Griffith University for engineering studies, the release added. — Staff Correspondent

SHIMOGA: The Aspee Agricultural Research and Development Foundation Malad of Mumbai has called for applications for the ASPEE-L.M. Patel Farmer of the Year Awards for 2005. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh each, a trophy and citation.

Trust to preserve,promote Carnatic music

SHIMOGA: Shivamukh Music Academy Trust, a new organisation committed to the cause of Carnatic music, was formed here. The president of the trust, M. Bharadwaj, told presspersons here on Tuesday that it will initiate steps to preserve and promote Carnatic music, and also support the musicians.

The secretary of the trust, Sringeri H.S. Nagaraj, said at least 500 members will be enrolled to conduct the activities of the trust.

BHADRAVATI: A three-day programme to observe Basava Jayanti will be organised from Wednesday by the Rashtreeya Basavadal and Sri Basaveshwara Dharma Samsthe. "Jagajyoti," Basaveshwara's procession, will be inaugurated by the Minister for Housing, Anjana Murthy. Programmes will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at Basava Mantap on Tarikere Road.
