CPI, CPI (M) oppose decision

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India has criticised the move by the Government to resume arms supply to Nepal, saying that there was not much change in the situation there.

Though a few leaders had been freed, hundreds of political activists are still in jails. ``Conditions of emergency remain and it has been lifted only on paper'', the party's Central Secretariat said in a release here. The party said there were restrictions on the movement of political leaders and the media continued to be under the control of the King. ``There is no evidence of restoring multi-party democracy.'' Under such circumstances the Government of India should not resume arms supply.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) too echoed similar views. Polit Bureau member S. Ramachandran Pillai said the party had communicated to the Government its opposition to supply of arms.
