KOLLAM: After a gap of more than 65 days, illegal granite quarries started operations on the Maruthi hillock at Muttara near here on Monday. It was following orders from the Government departments concerned in the wake of pressure from environmentalists that unauthorised quarry operators withdrew operations on the hillock. However, those residing in the vicinity reported that quarrying activities resumed on Monday with the use of jackhammers and other explosives. A petition in this connection was submitted on Tuesday to the District Collector, B. Sreenivas, by the general convener of the Maruthimala Samrakshana Samskarika Samithi, Odanavattom Vijayaprakash. The Collector has directed the concerned authorities to clear unauthorised quarries from the hillock.
