PATHANAMTHITTA: In a major crackdown on the sand mafia during night patrol, a police party, led by the Circle Inspector of Police in Kozhencherry, R.Chandrashekaran, seized three sand-laden lorries from the riverbed of Pampa in the wee hours of Tuesday. According to the inspector, three lorries were found parked on the riverbed at Parappuzha-kadavu, starting point of the famous Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali, and a group of people were loading sand into the lorry directly from the riverbed under the cover of night. The steel chain and lock of the local grama panchayat, blocking the entry of vehicles to the riverbed, were also found destroyed by the encroachers and the culprits swam across the river on seeing the police, Mr. Chandrashekharan said. However, the lorries were taken into custody and were taken to the Aranmula police station, he added. The police have registered two cases against 15 persons, including the owners of the three vehicles, for violating the sand-mining ban and for destroying public property, invoking the provisions in the Prevention of Destruction of Public Property (PDPP) Act, according to the police.
