Mother's lament: Rajamma, mother of Rajendran, who died in police custody, breaks down during a dharna organised by the AIYF demanding a judicial probe into the death, in Kollam on Tuesday
KOLLAM: The All India Youth Federation (AIYF) on Tuesday organised a march from the M.N. Memorial to the office of Kollam SP demanding the immediate arrest of those policemen responsible for the custodial death of Rajendran at the Kollam East Police Station on April 6. The police blocked the march before reaching the SP office. Rajendran's mother, Rajamma, joined a dharna held after the march. She wanted to know why her son was brutally assaulted and killed in spite of the fact that he was not involved in any crime. Rajendran's brothers, Thulasidharan and Muralidharan, and sister, Remani, also took part in the dharna. Rajendran was taken into custody by the police on the afternoon of April 6 from a private hospital in the city on charges of theft. In the evening, he was declared dead-on-arrival at the district hospital. Hospital authorities had informed the investigating officers that Rajendran was brought to the hospital dead. Inaugurating Tuesday's demonstration in front of the SP office, the State secretary of the AIYF, V.S. Sunil, demanded a judicial probe into the custodial death. He alleged that Crime Branch investigation into the case smacks of a conspiracy to protect the policemen who assaulted and killed Rajendran. Even after a month, the so-called Crime Branch investigation has not resulted in arresting even a single person. Action into the case appears to have been closed with the suspension of four policemen attached to the station, Mr. Sunil alleged. The AIYF State president, P.S. Supal, MLA, and the CPI district secretary, K.R. Chandramohan, too addressed the dharna.
