Basava Jayanthi celebrations begin in city today

MYSORE: The two-day Basava Jayanthi celebrations in Mysore will be inaugurated by the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilas Rao Deshmukh, here on Wednesday.

The celebrations will comprise cultural events, spiritual discourses and discussions. It is being organised by the district administration, the Department of Kannada and Culture, and the Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha at Kalamandira.

The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and the Suttur Math pontiff, Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji, will participate in the Basava Jayanthi celebrations.

The former Minister D.K. Shivakumar will release "Thames Nadiya Naadinalli," authored by S.P. Umadevi. The Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, H.C. Mahadevappa, and the Minister for Tourism, D.T. Jayakumar, will participate in the inaugural function.

The celebrations will be preceded by a colourful procession from Basaveshwara Circle. Tableaux, performance by folk troupes, bhajan melas, and vachana granthas carried on elephants are the other attractions planned during the procession.

The two-day event will include cultural programmes; a special lecture on Basavannana Tallanagalu by Kannada Sahitya Parishath President, Chandrashekara Patil; Vachana Sangeetha by Shankar Shanbhog and party; Chinnara Sangama; and talks on Sharana Sandesha.
