Officials flayed for pig menace

Staff Correspondent

Special squad says pigs have been shifted to Gaddige, Kadakola

MYSORE: The Mayor, Dakshina Murthy, today flayed the health officials for the continued pig menace in the city. He also reiterated the Mysore City Corporation's (MCC) determination to continue the pig eradication drive.

Mr. Murthy questioned the authority of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat and the Mysore Agenda Task Force (MATF) and welcomed the "constructive suggestions" from them for the all-round development of the city even as he cautioned them against insulting the elected representatives.

The Mayor was speaking at a press conference convened to refute the allegations made by the parishat and the task force that the pig eradication drive launched by the corporation was a farce as there was no pig-sty at K. Hemmananahalli as claimed by the authorities.

The MGP and the MATF members on Monday had taken presspersons to the area where the corporation claimed there was a pigsty for pig rearers. But when the team reached the spot there was no pigsty or any stray pigs.

The Mayor, however, insisted that the eradication drive was not a farce and that it is difficult to solve the problem within a few days. He said the corporation had taken note of the increase in the number of pigs in the city and has cautioned pig-rearers that the animals would be shot if found within city limits.

The pig-rearers have sought time to shift the animals and they are already in the process of moving the animals to the new facility. Mr. Murthy said 125 pigs have been caught and shifted.

He said he has directed the chief of the special squad to explain the whereabouts of the pigs. The president of the squad, N. Mara, said they have released most of the animals in Gaddige and Kadakola.
