VISAKHAPATNAM: MAY 10. The Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA) dominated the second day's races in the elimination series of the National Hobie Class championships at Rushikonda Bay on Tuesday. The fourth race was abandoned after the duo of S. Joshi and S. Mukherjee got the gun at the finish. A drifting anchor dragged away the race committee boat thereafter, leaving the finish line unclear, forcing Race Officer Lt. Col. (Retd.) Mohinder Pal Jaggi to abandon the race. Joshi and Mukherjee protested against the decision, over which the jury was expected to decide later in the evening. After the fifth race went ahead in the afternoon session, darkness descended as a storm seemed to brew over the bay. With wind speeds picking up, visibility failing and breakers plunging into troughs, the last race scheduled for the day was also called off in the interest of safety.
Timely action
The aforementioned safety aspect became paramount after the duo of T.S. Chaturvedi and Santosh were swept adrift about two nautical miles into the deep, after their mast came unstuck during the day's first and third race of the series. Timely action by the Organising Secretary, Lt. Col. Nasser Hussain Dubey prevented the pair from getting lost at sea or running into a reef. With little room for foul play in this class and being positioned close at hand, Jury member Col. Jhulka got into the rescue act when two boats capsized. In the fifth, Surender Saini and Neeraj Sharma of INSA moved to the fore in the first beat, from where there was no looking back. The results: Race 3: 1. Naresh Yadav & B.B. Barik (INSA); 2. Ram Kumar & T. Shiva (AYN); 3. Samal Pradhan & Brijesh Varma (INSA); 4. Rajasekhar & Dilip Donde (INSA). Rest of fleet did not finish. Race 5: Surender Saini & Neeraj Sharma (INSA); 2. Kamlesh Patel & Bhuvaneswaran (AYN); 3. Naresh Yadav & B.B. Barik (INSA); 4. Narender Singh &Santosh Pande (EMESA); 5. Arjun Singh & H.S. Tyagi (INSA).
