Public holiday
All Government offices, including industrial establishments of the Government and Government-controlled bodies and educational institutions in these areas will remain closed. Industrial undertakings and establishments in the neighbouring areas of the constituencies have been directed to declare a paid holiday to persons employed in their organisation who are living in the constituencies and are eligible to vote in the byelections, says a release from the Chief Electoral Officer. Admission notification
The university on Monday announced that the results of the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examinations 2005 would be released on Thursday night. Education department sources say that the results of the Plus-Two (Higher Secondary) may be released on May 17 or 18. Special Correspondent
Last date extended
Application forms will be available at Tamil Nadu Foundation, TNOU's information centre from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The cost is Rs. 100 if collected in person and Rs. 150 by post. Filled-in forms along with a demand draft and requisite enclosures will be accepted until May 31 for M.C.A., PGDCA, M.A., M.Com, B.B.A., B.A., B.T.S., B.Com. candidates, as well as vocational programmes such as desktop publishing, plumbing, four-wheeler mechanics and courses to become an AC and refrigeration catering assistance and household electricity servicing. Man kills son-in-law
The police sources here said Ponnalagan, a motor mechanic, was an alcoholic and used to frequently quarrel with his wife. On Monday too, he reportedly came home in an inebriated condition and entered into an argument with his wife. When Ponnalagan tried to attack his wife with the sickle, his father-in-law Azhagu (60), who entered the house tried to stop Ponnalagan. In the melee, Azhagu took the sickle and attacked Ponnalagan. Child workers rescued
A society official said 29 children were rescued and 25 of them between 10 and 14 years were identified as child workers. Of these, eight were from Kolkata. Raids were conducted on 42 goldsmithies at Sullivan Street, Edayar Street and Telugu Brahmin Street. About 15 of these children are studying in schools and have joined work for the vacation. They will be put back in schools and the rest would be enrolled in the residential schools run by the society, an official said. Staff Reporter
Draft electoral rolls released
Public can apply for addition, deletion and correction of data in the specified forms till May 30. The received application will be processed and finalised on June 20 and the supplementary rolls will be issued on July 20 after which the final electoral rolls will be published on July 30 next. Public can verify the draft electoral rolls in the respective polling station, post offices, RDO and Tahsildar offices between May 10 and May 30. Forms would neither be issued nor be received in bulk under any circumstance, a note from the district administration points out. Staff Reporter
Polio campaign on May 15
To facilitate the campaign, 766 special centres, including 735 in the rural areas, will be established Around 111 supervisors would oversee the campaign. Efforts will be taken to ensure that all children in the target group in the district were given polio drops on that day. The Collector, A. Karthik, has urged the public to join hands with the administration and the Health Department officials in the drive against polio by taking their infants to the nearest polio drops centre. Four killed in collision
The deceased were identified as Senthil Kumar (42), his daughters Archana (18) and Rajashree (12), and his niece Meenakshi (13) of Vellore. The accident occurred when the car bound for Vellore from Hogenakkal collided with a lorry while trying to avoid a pedestrian who attempted to cross the road. The car driver, Manohar (40) and another niece Nagammai (10) have been admitted to a hospital in Bangalore. The lorry driver escaped with minor injuries. - Staff Reporter
Two poachers held
On seeing the police, the duo attempted to flee. They were chased and nabbed and two unlicensed country-made guns recovered. The two admitted to hunting. The Hogenakkal police have registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Four held
The police said while two were arrested with 16 kg of crackers, one was nabbed with 5 kg of crackers. Muthu (20) was taken into custody from Athoor for possessing 100 gms each of aluminum and sulphur powder. Staff Reporter
