Public holiday

CHENNAI: The State Government has declared Saturday as public holiday in the Assembly constituency areas of Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts for the byelections on that day.

All Government offices, including industrial establishments of the Government and Government-controlled bodies and educational institutions in these areas will remain closed.

Industrial undertakings and establishments in the neighbouring areas of the constituencies have been directed to declare a paid holiday to persons employed in their organisation who are living in the constituencies and are eligible to vote in the byelections, says a release from the Chief Electoral Officer. — Staff Reporter

Admission notification

CHENNAI: Anna University will release the notification for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2005 on May 15. The applications will be sold from the next day, university officials said here on Tuesday.

The university on Monday announced that the results of the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examinations 2005 would be released on Thursday night.

Education department sources say that the results of the Plus-Two (Higher Secondary) may be released on May 17 or 18. — Special Correspondent

Last date extended

CHENNAI: The last date for submission of applications for programmes in Tamil Nadu Open University has been extended to May 31.

Application forms will be available at Tamil Nadu Foundation, TNOU's information centre from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The cost is Rs. 100 if collected in person and Rs. 150 by post.

Filled-in forms along with a demand draft and requisite enclosures will be accepted until May 31 for M.C.A., PGDCA, M.A., M.Com, B.B.A., B.A., B.T.S., B.Com. candidates, as well as vocational programmes such as desktop publishing, plumbing, four-wheeler mechanics and courses to become an AC and refrigeration catering assistance and household electricity servicing.

TNOU students can view the February 2005 examination results on the web site www.tnoutnf.org.

Man kills son-in-law

TIRUCHI: A 45-year old man was murdered allegedly by his father-in-law at the victim's house at Sokkanathapatti in the district on Monday night.

The police sources here said Ponnalagan, a motor mechanic, was an alcoholic and used to frequently quarrel with his wife. On Monday too, he reportedly came home in an inebriated condition and entered into an argument with his wife. When Ponnalagan tried to attack his wife with the sickle, his father-in-law Azhagu (60), who entered the house tried to stop Ponnalagan. In the melee, Azhagu took the sickle and attacked Ponnalagan. — Staff Reporter

Child workers rescued

COIMBATORE: The Labour Department and the Kovai Child Labour Abolition Support Society rescued 25 children in raids conducted on goldsmithies here on Tuesday.

A society official said 29 children were rescued and 25 of them between 10 and 14 years were identified as child workers. Of these, eight were from Kolkata. Raids were conducted on 42 goldsmithies at Sullivan Street, Edayar Street and Telugu Brahmin Street.

About 15 of these children are studying in schools and have joined work for the vacation.

They will be put back in schools and the rest would be enrolled in the residential schools run by the society, an official said. — Staff Reporter

Draft electoral rolls released

KARUR: Draft electoral rolls for the Assembly constituencies of Karur, Krishnarayapuram (Reserved), Kulithalai and Aravakurichi in the district were released on Tuesday.

Public can apply for addition, deletion and correction of data in the specified forms till May 30.

The received application will be processed and finalised on June 20 and the supplementary rolls will be issued on July 20 after which the final electoral rolls will be published on July 30 next.

Public can verify the draft electoral rolls in the respective polling station, post offices, RDO and Tahsildar offices between May 10 and May 30.

Forms would neither be issued nor be received in bulk under any circumstance, a note from the district administration points out. — Staff Reporter

Polio campaign on May 15

KARUR: A total of 98,921 children below the age of five in Karur district will be administered polio drops during the pulse polio campaign on May 15.

To facilitate the campaign, 766 special centres, including 735 in the rural areas, will be established

Around 111 supervisors would oversee the campaign.

Efforts will be taken to ensure that all children in the target group in the district were given polio drops on that day.

The Collector, A. Karthik, has urged the public to join hands with the administration and the Health Department officials in the drive against polio by taking their infants to the nearest polio drops centre. — Staff Reporter

Relief disbursal work reviewed

NAGAPATTINAM: The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, on Tuesday, reviewed the distribution of essential commodities through the public distribution system and also the relief assistance and essential commodities provided to the family cardholders in the tsunami-affected areas.

The Collector instructed the Civil Supplies officials to monitor the stock position and the distribution of essential commodities in the fair price shops.

He had also instructed them to monitor distribution of rice to old age pensioners in the fair price shops. — Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 52.79 feet today.

The inflow was 1044 cusecs and the discharge 870 cusecs. — Saff Reporter

Four killed in collision

Krishnagiri: Four persons, including three girls, were killed and two sustained serious injuries when the car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a lorry at Chappanipatti, 20 km from here, on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Senthil Kumar (42), his daughters Archana (18) and Rajashree (12), and his niece Meenakshi (13) of Vellore.

The accident occurred when the car bound for Vellore from Hogenakkal collided with a lorry while trying to avoid a pedestrian who attempted to cross the road. The car driver, Manohar (40) and another niece Nagammai (10) have been admitted to a hospital in Bangalore. The lorry driver escaped with minor injuries. - Staff Reporter

Two poachers held

Dharmapuri: Two persons were arrested with country-made guns in the Hogenakkal forest 45 kms from here on Monday. According to the police, a team was on patrol in the forest area when they saw Subramani (38) and Shanmugam (40) of Ootamalai.

On seeing the police, the duo attempted to flee. They were chased and nabbed and two unlicensed country-made guns recovered.

The two admitted to hunting. The Hogenakkal police have registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Water release

Erode: The Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said that water would be released from the Lower Bhavani Project Reservoir on May 11 for irrigation of wet crops in Thadapalli and Arakkankottai ayacuts. - Staff Reporter

Four held

Tuticorin: The police arrested four persons for illegal possession of sulphur and aluminum powders, besides firecrackers, in raids conducted at various parts of the district on Sunday night.

The police said while two were arrested with 16 kg of crackers, one was nabbed with 5 kg of crackers.

Muthu (20) was taken into custody from Athoor for possessing 100 gms each of aluminum and sulphur powder.— Staff Reporter

Two drug peddlers held

Tuticorin : The police seized 150 gm of ganja and arrested Senthil and Arockiasamy in this connection on Sunday evening. — Staff Reporter
