NEW DELHI: In an ambitious move to get gifted dropouts back to school, a new talent search by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will now offer 100 children from across the country a chance to complete their dream of being educated citizens. Re-christened the National Talent Promotion Scheme for dropout students at a NCERT meeting here today, the scheme is aimed at not just identifying talented students who wanted to pursue their studies but had to dropout, but also ensuring that they get that much needed opening to explore their new avenues. While pointing out that the new scheme will for the first time make use of the national and State open schools as a medium of popularising such an initiative, V.K.Jain, who heads the committee on the scheme, explained that "the objective is to find students who are inclined towards education and are trying hard to complete their schooling despite the hardships. The target is not students who prefer to sit at home than studying. With over 60 per cent of school students dropping out before completing their Class X examinations, the NCERT says the idea is to motivate these children so they are back in the system. The scheme will be introduced from the coming year. To be open for students who are at the end of their elementary schooling stage or rather who are in Class VII or VIII, the 100 winners of the scheme would be helped to complete their postgraduate courses, with those keen to pursue sciences and social sciences also being helped to complete their Ph.D through the funds. The NCERT awards 1,000 scholarships each year under the National Talent Search Scheme for regular students, and the proposed scheme for dropout students will be soon the same lines.
